“I’ve been a street photographer for almost a decade now and I have made photos of many streets in many cities all over Europe. Since I live near Amsterdam it is very easy for me to take pictures there. When it comes to Amsterdam I more and more aim to document the city and its people. We all know the famous images made by photographers like William Klein, Robert Frank, Henri Cartier-Bresson. In their images you see people and their environment. You can almost put a date to every picture. Ed van der Elsken was a Dutch photographer that documented Amsterdam years ago. And his pictures show Amsterdam and its people in the 1950’s to the 1980’s.
I think it is important to maintain the ‘tradition’ of documenting the streets so people won’t forget the history of a city. That is the main reason why I visit and photograph Amsterdam so often.
When I took my first “street pics” they where more about the people than about the streets. Now I try to get them in balance. The streets don’t live without the people.”
